The Real Opportunity of Change: Engaging Your Workforce
Peter Bregman, Keynote Speaker at Linkage Change 2001, Corporate Culture Forum April 30-May 3, 2001, San Francisco, California.

Most people see change as something to suffer through on the way to something better, or just different. Change, like cough medicine, is something we swallow quickly while holding our noses. Seen through a different lens though, change (even a painful change such as layoffs) is an opportunity to create a more vibrant workforce. April 30-May 3, 2001: Peter Bregman, Keynote Speaker Linkage Change 2001, Corporate Culture Forum, San Francisco, CA. "The Real Opportunity of Change: Engaging your Workforce"

Change in all its forms is an opportunity for the organization to become more vibrant. Not necessarily happier all the time, but always more alive. A place where people run to work. Where they would keep working even if they won the lottery. An organization that gives its people ownership, that allows them to be more impactful than they could be on their own. A place that is trusted to speak the truth. An organization filled with optimistic actors, not whining victims. A place with a hum and a purpose.

Organization change that is imposed from above, from top management and consultants with their communication plans and trainings, by definition will not increase vibrancy. You can't beg, force, scare, or motivate people to change. You can only give them the opportunity to choose to change. The only way to create a vibrant organization is by engaging the people in that organization to own the change and their own contribution to it.

Peter Bregman will talk about how take advantage of the opportunity of change to engage your workforce. He will share his experiences designing and implementing change efforts at several large organizations, including lessons learned and some simple ways to engage the entire workforce to deal with change, thereby creating a more vibrant organization.
